Word Processing - Using Tabs & the Ruler Bar

The RULER BAR at the top of your document is the key to efficient formatting of text on the page.

Step 4: Left Alignment
  • With the Food Items still selected, click the LEFT ALIGNMENT button just above the ruler bar
  • Some of the prices should start to line up if you've put TABS in front of them

NOTE
* If you haven't put tabs in between your items and the prices, DO IT NOW!

Step 5: Adjust the LEFT INDENT

The LEFT INDENT is controlled by the lower triangle at the left side of the ruler bar.
  • SLIDE the LEFT INDENT so that the items are aligned with the title of your menu a little better.

Step 6: Create a TAB STOP
  • Carefully click IN the ruler bar, and the tabs in your menu should push the prices over to meet the TAB STOP. The default is a LEFT Tab Stop, but we'll adjust that next.
  • Notice that the TAB STOP overwrites any default tab stops already in the ruler bar
  • REMOVING a TAB STOP is easy - just drag it DOWN off the ruler bar

Step 7: Change the TAB STOP settings
  • Double click the new tab stop in the ruler bar, and you should bring up the Paragraph Formatting dialogue for TABS
  • Change the TYPE to "Decimel"
  • Change the FILL CHARACTER to "..." - Click OKAY

You should see the formatting change so that the numbers align properly, and dots appear between the items and their prices.

The final format should look something like this.

Text or prices can be altered without compromising the alignment

  2. Click the "Format Paintbrush" tool at the top of the screen
  3. Drag the paintbrush cursor to select text that you want to apply the format to.
